Deselech Mamiru, 37, is a widowed mother raising her two children, Bereket (7) and Doctor (1), on her own. After losing her husband to tuberculosis, she became the family’s sole provider. With no farmland and no relatives able to offer support, she survives by selling small quantities of maize, earning just $6 per month. Providing enough food is a constant struggle, and the family often faces hunger. Out of necessity, Bereket has had to travel away from home to work instead of enjoying the safety and opportunities every child deserves. Despite these challenges, Deselech remains determined to create a better future for her children. She hopes to start a bull fattening and goat-selling business to build a stable source of income and provide for her family’s basic needs.
